JORDAN

Jordan is a keen climber, surfer and kayaker. He brought us his Renault Master this summer and wanted a sturdy, robust build that would support all his outdoor activities. Starting with a blue and yellow colour scheme and maritime styling clues, we set out to maximise storage and function.

The nautical-inspired bulkheads divide the space into kitchen and bedroom/dining areas, both of which feature large windows with solid timber panelling and bespoke blinds.

The kitchen houses a large stainless steel sink, twin alcohol burning stove and 45litre fridge. The undersink storage contains plenty of space for waste bin, grey water tank and a drying rack, located above the diesel heater output- perfect for drying clothes or airing climbing shoes after a day at the local crag. High level shelving is provided for those smaller items, and the large floor-level drawer provides storage for dried foods or other pantry items. Behind the main sliding door entrance, a chemical toilet is provided for comfort.

The rear bedroom/dining area features double-sided sofas which pull out to form a double bed. A folding table can comfortably seat 4 people for dining, or it can be collapsed for use as a desk for one. When not in use, the desk is stored out of site behind the rear bulkhead.

When night approaches, the driver-side sofa can pull out to form a double bed. The 125mm memory foam mattress and full-width bed slats provide a much more comfortable sleep than most pull-out beds, which rely on much shorter slats that cannot flex as easily.

Underneath the sofa/bed, 2 trunk areas provide cavernous amounts (300litres) of storage for clothes and equipment. Access is provided by lifting the bed section - a top-loading design allows maximum storage potential when compared to drawers or front-opening cupboards.

Behind the rear bulkhead, under-floor storage provides room for ropes, shoes or a roof access ladder, and side caddies hold the large freshwater tank, shower head and folding table.

The use of birchwood plywood allows for strong yet lightweight cabinets, with robust doors and drawer fronts, which were painted yellow - Jordan's favourite colour. The bulkheads and trim are beech stained in rich smoked tones- a resilient hardwood which will look great for years to come.
